In addition to taking stock of the situation of the organic movement in Europe and around the world, the common thread running through the seminars at Biofach 2022 is the climate change emergency. The response in Nuremberg is to turn agriculture towards the organic production model.
“In this period of serious political and economic crisis – declared Janusz Wojchiechowski, European Commissioner for Agriculture, at the opening ceremony of the world’s largest trade fair for the industry – organic production is the right choice because only by producing in a sustainable way and renouncing an agriculture based on dependence on fossil fuels, we can best face global challenges”.
“Organic – added Wojchiechowski, – represents an important contribution to the food safety, creating positive results for the environment, society and the rural economy. It opens up new opportunities for all producers, workers and processors of organic products. In today’s geopolitical crisis, we have the opportunity to understand the real value of organic agriculture: it is a way to be independent from large fertiliser suppliers and other inputs resulting from a non-eco-friendly economy”.
“We have to act quickly. Climate change is happening right now”, emphasised Tina Andres, president of the German organisation BÖLW (in the photo on the left). “An ecological system can and must provide responses to these kinds of problems, but we are still waiting for measures to be implemented in order to achieve the ambitious goals that Europe has set itself.
And this is all the more important today because of the rise in product prices due to inflation and the reduction in agricultural incomes. This makes the introduction of organic farming on a large scale all the more urgent”.
