During the annual meeting of the Edmund Mach Foundation in San Michele all’Adige, in Trentino, it was highlighted that organic wine consumption worldwide has more than doubled in the last 10 years and now accounts for 3.5% of total wine consumption. This development has been supported by a steady expansion of the area destined for organic viticulture. In 2019 (latest available data) it counted just under 470 thousand hectares, of which about 400 thousand in Europe (11.4% of the vineyard area). On this continent, Italy, France and Spain compete for the primacy with about 100 thousand hectares each.

Trentino itself is expanding its vineyard area for organic wine production. In 2021 the certified organic and in-conversion areas reached 1,368 hectares with a further increase of 66 hectares compared to 2020. The percentage of organic vineyards in Trentino over the total area under vines has risen to 13.3%.
