Organic farming allows a cut in energy consumption by a third by using less intensive techniques, short supply chains and the avoidance of synthetic chemical fertilizers produced with the use of gas. Organically farmed land in Italy has reached almost 2.2 million hectares, an all-time high. Over the last ten years, the surface area has almost doubled (+99%). As a result, organic soils are 17.4% of the cultivated areas in Italy, which is almost the double of the European average (around 9%).
This is what emerged from the analysis of Coldiretti, the main national association of Italian farmers, published for the inauguration of SANA on 8th September 2022 at the Bologna Fair. Organics is fully part of the ‘Made in Italy’ agri-food model supported by Coldiretti.
“Thanks also to its leadership in organic farming, italian agriculture is now the greenest in Europe with a leading role in the sustainable growth of the country”, said the President of Coldiretti Ettore Prandini in Bologna.
Coldiretti has recently founded an association, led by a woman, Letizia Gardoni, that brings together the organic and biodynamic companies associated with the union, which is called Coldiretti BIO.
