Recent international developments have emerged regarding the controversy surrounding former European Commissioner Frans Timmermans and the alleged use of EU funds to promote the Green Deal. The Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported that the European Commission allegedly used funds from the LIFE program to finance environmental NGOs tasked with lobbying for more ambitious environmental policies. This has led to criticism from opponents of the Green Deal, who view it as a serious democratic interference.

In response, Piotr Serafin, European Commissioner for Budget and Administration, acknowledged that it was “inappropriate” to bind NGOs to lobbying activities targeting members of the European Parliament and assured that measures have been taken to prevent such practices in the future.

Frans Timmermans defended the Green Deal, emphasizing its importance as the basis for EU industrial policy and calling for unity among European progressives to counter the shift of center-right parties toward the far right.

The Italian Association for Organic Agriculture (AIAB) strongly rejected the accusations against environmental NGOs, calling them “absurd and unfounded.” AIAB’s president, Giuseppe Romano, reiterated full support for the Green Deal and the Farm to Fork strategy, emphasizing the necessity of ambitious policies to address the climate crisis threatening agricultural production.

This controversy has sparked a broader debate on the role of NGOs in shaping EU policies and the transparency of funding mechanisms. The European Commission has stated that while NGOs play a crucial role in policy development, it is essential to ensure that funding practices remain transparent and appropriate.
