“Inizio”, a new variety of organic durum wheat, is born in Italy. The project was launched by the “Seminare il Futuro” Foundation, under the direction of bio-breeder Federica Bigongiali, and supported by NaturaSì and the producers of the Girolomoni Cooperative, based in the Marche Region.
Giovanni Battista Girolomoni, president of the cooperative and the “Seminare il Futuro” Foundation, commented: “There is a category of scientists, multinationals and farmers who see the progress in genetic engineering or in synthetic biology to achieve higher yields. We believe that the selection of new varieties to be able to face the challenges of today and tomorrow must be done considering the natural relationship of the plant with the soil, the ecosystem and production needs”.
The seed will be multiplied in the member farms of the Girolomoni Cooperative, up to 100 tonnes of seed. For grain production, we will have to wait two years. In 2024, 500 hectares will be sown with the “Inizio” variety.
