In the second half of 2023, the European Commission will submit a proposal to add the new genome “editing” techniques in the EU legislation. This was announced by the Commissioner, Janusz Wojciechowski, during the informal meeting of EU Agriculture Ministers in Prague from 14th to 16th September. At the moment, new genome techniques are equated with GMOs.

“Our proposal – the Commissioner stated – will be based on a solid impact study. We must be extremely careful to avoid any danger to public health, environment and to the economic interests of farmers. For example, it will be necessary to protect organic farming from any negative impact“.

The informal ministerial meeting was dedicated to the role that the EU primary sector has to play in order to guarantee food security on global scale. The meeting was attended by the agriculture ministers of Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.

“It emerged from the discussions that, in order to guarantee production, one of the main solutions is to make use of research, innovations and the most advanced technologies, including precision agriculture”. This is what is reported in a note published at the end of the meeting.
