The Tuscany Region has officially recognised the Maremma organic district. In Tuscany, organic districts are growing quickly. The newcomer enriches Tuscany’s heritage of organic districts, joining Fiesole (the first, born only two years ago), Val di Cecina, Calenzano, Montalbano and Chianti.
The Maremma district includes the municipalities of Capalbio, Castiglione della Pescaia, Grosseto, Magliano in Toscana, Manciano, Orbetello and Scansano. The new president is the mayor of Grosseto Antonfrancesco Vivarelli Colonna.
The district territory, which corresponds to the administrative borders of the seven municipalities, has a Utilisable Agricultural Area (UAA) of almost 96,000 hectares, 41% of which are farmed organically, thanks in part to the approximately 300 organic farms that participate in the project. It is therefore one of the largest in Europe. While Europe has set a target of 25% of the surface area cultivated organically by 2030, Tuscany is already at 35%.
